Overheard UES (@overheardues) prefers to keep her identity anonymous. But what we can tell you is that the connoisseur of the curated quotables grew up surrounded by the Upper East Side lifestyle portrayed in Gossip Girl so she knows whereof she speaks.
And there’s no one better to publish these sometimes eye-rolling but always hilarious soundbites from the elite of the UES.
Do you have a favorite Overheard quote? If so, what is it? My favorite quote is one I posted around Christmas and it probably received the most likes: “My girlfriend’s getting a monogrammed bag for Christmas. I want to make it clear she won’t be changing her initials anytime soon.” Making fun of things that are basic like monograms or relationships always do well with my audience. What's the best place to overhear fodder for Overheard? The group chat. It’s one of the main sources of my inspiration. I don’t actually overhear any of it. A majority of my content is some iteration of something said and I like to make it funny. Photo by by RomitaGirl67
What's the biggest thing (OG) Gossip Girl gets wrong about the UES? That UES teens are having great sex... sorry boys that just wasn’t true. Also, the wardrobe. While it’s fun to see no one dressed up on a day to day basis. We had uniforms or dress codes. And customizing them was not an option. Most of our clothes consisted of polo shirts and sweatpants. What does it get right? The independence of the kids. We didn’t need parents driving us around like when you’re in the suburbs. We could navigate around the city by ourselves and go hang out with each other at an early age. It was common to hit up dinner at a restaurant with your friends on a Friday night when you were 15. Very common for parents to leave kids home alone a lot as well. Photo by glennharper
What is the must-have accessory for the summer? A vaccine card. Kidding, but for me I’m kind of boring and I prefer to keep things simple. Pair of sunglasses which compliment you and a piece of jewelry that makes you happy. I have a pair of Christopher Cloos glasses that were gifted to me a while back and I promote the brand on my stories a lot. Nicest guys run the company and I’m very picky about glasses so it’s nice to promote a brand I really enjoy. I also always have on a gold necklace and ring. I’m usually in pale or white colors which makes them more noticeable. For guys I’d suggest the same thing, good pair of glasses and a watch they love. Photo courtesy of Christoper Cloos
What's your favorite summer cocktail? Anything fruity. I’m not big into cocktails but if I go to a bar that specializes in them I always love to try something new. Penrose, the “UES” ice cream speakeasy, and the Milton will always deliver a great drink. Photo by SAWADA Tadashi
Have most UESers left for good? Or are we in for a crazy fall? Nope, most of the people I know never permanently left. Many have just upgraded to larger spaces so they can work from home. A lot of people make fun of it up here because they’ve never spent time up here. It can be very expensive to buy but rent is actually very inexpensive compared to a lot of neighborhoods and the apartment sizes are a lot better than what you get further downtown. Going out downtown is fun but people prefer to be up here because they don’t want to live where they party. Photo by angela n./Creative Commons
